Support coordination is the process through which NDIS participants are assisted in acquiring a support plan (whether they require sports rehab, psychological services, nursing services, etc. in their support plan) and organising various resources and services to meet their needs as a participant. Those who assist participants in this process are known as NDIS support coordinators.
A support coordinator’s goal is not just to help set up an NDIS support plan for the participant, but also to help the participant understand what funded supports are available to them, how they will be paid for, what they should expect, etc. It is not the job or intention of a support coordinator to make decisions for you — what ends up in your support plan is entirely up to you, and your coordinator should be providing extensive information to you and your loved ones about the most relevant supports available to you, the alternatives, the potential boundaries to you receiving these supports, and how they they will be delivered.
As part of building a support plan, an NDIS support coordinator should work with you to understand and overcome any challenges you may have while trying to consistently and reliably access your supports, before the plan is finalised. For example: if you have difficulty speaking, but you must communicate with a certain NDIS service provider on a daily basis, you will require some sort of workaround in order to have your support plan work for you. Often, situations such as these require you to work on your support plan with a specialist support coordinator.
In addition to helping you create a support plan, a specialist support coordinator is able to help you address complex barriers, as well as adress complex support needs. Simply put, if your needs as an NDIS participant are beyond the scope of what is required to support the typical participant, you almost certainly have specialist support coordination as part of your NDIS funding plan, and will therefore need to talk to a specialist coordinator.
Specialist support coordinators provide a higher level of support coordination and must be specialists, such as social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists or other similarly-qualified professionals. These specialists will work with you and the people in your daily life to address complex support needs, identifying supports that are already present in your life as well as available funded supports that you could utilise — not only have your needs supported, but to become more independent and achieve long-term goals.
Â
At the end of the day, the purpose of the NDIS is to build resilience and independence in the participant. When talking to an NDIS support coordinator, they should be advising you on how to build your support plan with long-term goals firmly in mind. Your coordinator should also be helping you to build your confidence and skills in order to implement the support plan by yourself — they should show you how to get the most out of your plan by teaching you how to use NDIS systems and processes (such as claiming your supports through the NDIA), set up the supports yourself, and even negotiate with service providers.
An NDIS support coordinator has a number of responsibilities including building reports for the NDIA that show how they have helped you utilise your funding for the best possible outcome, which they must do at plan implementation, mid-term, and before any plan reassessment. They should also be monitoring the plan budget, as well as the effectiveness of the supports themselves. This helps them see what works and what doesn’t when re-assessing your support plan.
At VSS, we help participants understand their NDIS plan, develop knowledge about their options with their NDIS plan, enter into service agreements with the support of their choice, and prepare them for plan reviews. For participants with complex needs, our specialised support coordinators engage you, the participant (and others close to you) in support planning sessions that are designed to ensure that you get the most out of your plan in line with your goals, needs, and expectations.
